Compulsory unionism
Sir,—J. Stirling (June 23), needs to be reminded that we are not a “free society,” that no such society exists today nor ever has except perhaps in the distant past. I question his definition of unions being “private” organisations. This suggests that anything “non-State” must be private. Nonsense. One example of compulsory association is the legal requirement to pay dues to an insurance company during a hire-purchase agreement. J. Stirling would agree such agreements are financial necessities in practice. But the real aim of Government-led attacks on unions is not the removal of the unqualified preference clauses but a general clamp-down on the individual’s rights across the board.—Yours, etc., GRAEME YARDLEY.
