French Jobless up
France’s Socialist Government says that unemployment rose 1.3 per cent last month and employers’ leaders warned that the economy had moved sharply into recession. The Labour Ministry said that the number of workers without jobs had increased in May to 2,029,000, equivalent to 8.5 per cent of the work-force. The higher May jobless figures, which came after slight improvements in the two preceding months, were consistent with unofficial forecasts that unemployment would rise to 2.4 million by the end of next year as a result of Government austerity measures. — Paris. t
