Glenmark pipes removed
The troubled Glenmark irrigation scheme has met with another problem. A total of 1300 m of g6oomm pipes laid along McKenzies Road, Waipara, have had to be removed because they were found to be leaking after the topsoil had been laid and levelled. The project engineer from Royds, Sutherland and McLeay, Ltd, Mr Jim Park, said it appeared that undersize rubber rings had been included in a consignment received for the project. He said that these were being returned to Christchurch to be analysed.
Mr Park said that there appeared to be nothig wrong with the pipes. The pipes were the first part of the main pipeline from the Weka Pass intake to the storages. Mr Park said that the first length of pipe was tested and retested after back-filling. It was not until a second length was being tested that it was found that water was leaking from the first stage. He said that it appeared once the pipes had a load on them, the under-size rubber rings were displaced slightly and leaked.
