JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY OF NORTH QUEENSLAND PROFESSOR OF EDUCATION AND HEAD OF THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION FOLLOWING THE AMALGAMATION of the former Townsville College of Advanced Education with the University, the council has established a new School of Education with effect from July 1, 1983. The school will consist of three new departments, each headed normally by a professor. In addition, there will be a Professorial Head of School who will not also head a department. Applications are now invited for the newly created position of Professor of Education and Head of the School of Education. The School of Education will be a Professional School of the University with a commitment to teaching, learning and research about educative and schooling processes and to the critical study of education as a social institution. It will assume responsibility for the teaching and research activities of the present University Department of Education and the education courses of the former college. In particular, a major commitment of the school will be the continuation of the University’s preservice primary and secondary teacher education programs. The new situation will provide an excellent opportunity for the Head of School to consolidate and influence the direction of the teaching, research and development activities of the school and its constituent departments. Applicants must possess a strong background in education, which should be demonstrated by the possession of higher degree qualifications (preferably at the Doctorate level), a proven record of research and publication in an appropriate area of education, successful and substantial teaching experience at either primary or secondary school levels, a commitment to teacher education and an understanding of and a sympathy with the philosophy of advanced education, in addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate the capacity to give effective leadership in the academic and administrative functions of the school. The salary for the position is as for a Professor currently $Au5t46,977 per annum.
