Tourism

Sir,—At last we have a Minister who has the fortitude to point out the obvious. The Minister for Tourism, Mr Rod Talbot, is absolutely right when he says that the industry is hamstrung by red tape and prejudice. The resistance to liberalising the licensing laws and providing casinos and extended shopping hours where necessary were deficiencies raised by Mr Talbot. Undoubtedly the big three in earning overseas exchange are primary produce, light manufacturing, where production can be changed to meet specific market requirements, and tourism. The stumbling block in tourist development is the protection of Air New Zealand’s external flights and the whole operation has become a sacred cow. In the internal service a passenger from Oamaru has to fly to Wellington first and then back to Christchurch. Air New Zealand dictates that if an Oamaruvian wishes to travel to Invercargill there is the wonderful choice of flying to Wellington or travelling by car to the Dunedin aerodrome. — Yours, etc., L. J. STEVENS. Oamaru. June 22, 1983.
