Mr Knox not needed for talks to start — F.O.L.

PA Wellington The presence of the Federation of Labour president, Mr W. J. Knox, was not necessary for longer-term wage-fixing talks to start said the F.O.L. secretary, Mr K. G. Douglas, yesterday. Mr Knox left New Zealand on May 1 for a trip including the International Labour Organisation conference in Geneva, and his office said yesterday that it was uncertain of his return date. It was not expected, however, to be before mid-July.

Mr Muldoon said on Wednesday that he did not consider the talks could

start without Mr Knox. Mr Douglas said the F.O.L. had responded to the Prime Minister and said there should be no delay because of Mr Knox being overseas. The letter reaffirmed F.O.L. availability for the talks. The Employers’ Federation executive director, Mr J. W. Rowe, who has been in Geneva, will return to New Zealand today and the Minister of Labour, Mr Bolger, is due back on Monday. Mr Muldoon said the employers had proposals before him now on a longerterm wage-fixing system, and a trade union response was awaited.
