Refinery gas ‘no secret’
PA Whangarei A second source of hydrocarbon contamination in the building at Marsden Point where four men were seriously injured last week has been confirmed by the JV2 construction consortium.
The project manager, Mr Jack Hardie, said yesterday that the fact that hydrocarbons were found in water under the excavations for the control room earlier this year “was no secret.”
The water under the excavation had been monitored until the 300 mm thick concrete shell for the control building was completed. This monitoring had not been continued inside the building as "by design there was no way that anything should have seeped into the shell,” Mr Hardie said.
“It now appears that there was seepage and we are investigating how this has happened.” The latest tests by the Labour Department, taken at 15 points round the site had again shown the site to be safe for working, with the exception of the control building itself, Mr Hardie said.
The 98 clerical workers at the refinery have joined the walk-out by the 1700 outdoor workers.
