‘Pioneer Women’
sh-,—l have just watched “Pioneer Women,” screening half an hour later than normal because scenes of V.D. victims might disturb children. I cannot understand what was disturbing about facial spots, open sores, and hallucinating victims. Such scenes could be described as unpleasant but hardly squeamish compared with other “nasties” that children are exposed to on television, such as violence, and even the news. This was a highly educational programme, the implications being very real in today’s society. Our censors have once again shown they are not thinking people. By making an issue out of such a programme they simply draw more attention to it. Remember the fuss over a few intimate moments in “Brideshead”? I am sure that scene was more pleasant to watch than the V.D. scene yet our “Brideshead” was axed, not rescheduled. When are our censors going to come to thensenses? — Yours, etc., L. GLASSON. June 21, 1983.
