Canty cycling championships

In virtually perfect conditions, but far from ideal fields, the Canterbury professional track cycling championships concluded at Denton Park on Wednesday evening with victories to Tony Ward and the experienced Clayton Yaxley. Though leading out for the last lap of the junior 1600 m. Ward was never really challenged by Kane Read and Graham Schist; while Yaxley quickly found himself with only Steve’Doherty and Greg Cox for opposition in the senior 8000 m. These three had blasted the field apart before halfway and the final three were passed on the final bend as Doherty led out in the desperate finish, Yaxley crossing the line less than a halfwheel clear but with arm aloft in triumph. That conditions were impeccable was reflected in the junior B and senior amateur pursuit teams both easily breaking smin in their first competitive outings. The DB Brewery 1000 m series were concluded, Craig Adair completing an inevitable victory in the amateur series, but the novices were much more closely bunched. George McAloon won a series which was always keenlycontested when he was third while the pace-setter, Shayne Hendren, was unplaced. There was no shortage of entertaining supporting events, those including critical penultimate races for the "Aces” 400 m series and the semi-finals of the novice pursuit for the Tabak Cup. In the latter Craig Fentori rode the fastest time of the season by a Canterbury rider, 2min 7.35 s in beating McAloon, and he will ride against Phillip Gibbs in . the final. Tony Duder virtually made certain of the amateur "Aces" in a roughly-run race, in which not all the field appeared to ride to win so much as hindering others; while McAloon completed a double of series victories, as well as winning the feature 4000 m. The curtain was brought down on the evening with an exhilarating finish to the amateur 8000 m. Tony. Strang holding control with 200 m to ride, but Adair and Murray Steele finishing far too well for him. Results:— PROFESSIONAL Championships—Junior 1600 m: A. Ward 1, K. Read 2. G. D. Schist 3.
