Air New Zealand

Sir, — What a pity J. B. C. Taylor (February 27) did not question the hostesses about the level of staffing before sniping at Air New Zealand. Had he bothered to Sk, he would have found that the number of hostesses crewing a flight is set by the Ministry of Transport and is in . direct proportion to the number of passenger seats in the aircraft. This is a safety requirement so that sufficient numbers of trained personnel are present in the event of an accident to assist passengers, both ablebodied and aged or physically handicapped, to vacate the aircraft in the shortest possible time. I suggest that were. J. B. C. Taylor present in an accident : where smoke restricted

visibility, he would be complaining that only half the number of hostesses necessary were present, and would willingly pay double his fare to get out safely. — Yours, etc., R. A. . DEAR. February 28, 1982.
