Irrigation
Sir, — Mr Watson, chairman of the Central Plains Irrigation Association is quoted as saying (“The Press,” February 25) that groundwater irrigation was a remote, possibility, because it could not be proved that there was sufficient water below the ground, and because farmers could not afford it. Despite these assertions, scientists continue to study these resources, and the North Canterbury Catchment Board survey will., be completed by the end of this year. This report should supply the nature and extent of the resource. At present it is felt that large areas of the plains could be irrigated from such sources but not, unfortunately, every farm. Mr Watson concludes that farmers cannot afford to develop it anyway. If this is the case, how can they afford a community river supply scheme. There is only one answer; both must be subsidised by the taxpayer. As a fisherman, I know which one I shall want my taxes contributing to. - Yours, etc., J. DE WIT. February 26, 1982.
