Pacific parliament proposed
PA Wellington The Labour backbencher, Mr M. K. Moore, has proposed the establishment of a' Pacific parliament to back up the existing South Pacific Forum. Mr Moore, the member for Papanui, who is preparing a book on the concept of a political and economic community for the South Pacific, said that the new parliament would involve delegated members from the parliaments of each forum nation. / The forum would remain ’ : an annual meeting of theL i heads of government of the [ !■ Pacific’s Commonwealth '• i nations, the South Pacific t ' Commission, and the South • I Pacific Bureau of Economic ’ Co-operation would act as ' the secretariat for the new i body. i The new body would be ! similar in many respects to I ! the European Parliament, ! which since 1979 has been i directly elected, and would : co-ordinate matters of com- : mon interest such as the Law of the Sea, the place of multi-national corporations, defence, and transport. i
