PA Dunedin The; reigning champion, Petone, almost slid out the back door on the first day of the' New Zealand rowing championships at Lake Waihola yesterday when it came only third in its heat of the premier coxed four. Conditions were calm when the crews lined up for the heat, but the southerly sprang up early in the race and the regatta was abandoned for the day after only two further heats had been rowed. Among the crews in the circulation area of “The Press” to win their heats, were the Wairau and Canterbury No. 1 intermediate lightweight fours; the Wairau No. 2 and Canterbury intermediate single scullers; the Wairau No. 2 and Blenheim intermediate double; the Avon and Nelson novice pairs; and the Avon novice eight.
