The big grass fife ended a two-week respite for firefighters in drought-stricken Canterbury after the night of February 17, when scrub and grass fires raged on three sides of the city.
Last evening’s fire started about 5.45 p.m. on the south side of the Main West Coast railway line.
Units from Christchurch, Darfield, and other brigades were supported by water tenders owned by local bodies in the area.
