S.I. league debut against Canberra

By

JOHN COFFEY

South Island will make its debut in the sAust46o,ooo KB Cup rugby league • tournament against Canberra on the night of Wednesday, April 14. The receipt of the information that South would be required to play in the fourth match of the cup contest has persuaded, officials to change the format of the island coaching school ■ in Christchurch at Easter weekend. It was intended to have South Island play Wellington on Easter Saturday and to have an interprovincial game between Canterbury and West Coast on Easter Monday; The school will still start on Good Friday, but: the “shadow” South Island team is now to be opposed by an

Invitation XIII on the Saturday evening, with the travelling side to train again on the Sunday and fly to Sydney on Easter Monday. Although inevitably early in the season, the draw has not been unkind to South.Canberra is one of two new clubs in the Sydney premiership, and it is probable, that it will also be making its first appearance under the floodlights of Leichardt Oval, Sydney, against South. Even more important, Canberra will have to divide its attention that week. Its Easter week-end champion-' ship match is against Parramatta,. the reigning Sydney title-holder and a club renowned for its physical, as well as football, strength. An indication of the com-

position of the South team will be given when another “shadow XIII” plays an Invitation- side at the Show Grounds in mid-March, probably' the evening of March 13.

Mr Harry Walker, the convener of the South selection panel, said yesterday that he was “quite pleased” with the second trial at Greymouth last Sunday. “There was noone truly outstanding, but the majority of players had good games. “It is vital that we eliminate as many mistakes as possible. In the first two quarters players were inclined to do things too quickly and there was often a lack of support. Later, they judged their passing much better and were running onto the ball,” Mr. Walker said.
