Low bowls entries
Christchurch seems likely to make a tentative, entry into professional bowls this week-end when the Linwood club. stages the first licensed tournament in the centre.■' The three-day tournament, which carries almost 52500 in prizes, including a return trip "to the Queensland Gold Coast tournament in July for the winning team, has drawn a disappointing response, . Linwood was counting on some 50 to 60 entries, but late last week it had only 25. The closing date has now
been extended to Thursday. One of the organisers, Mr Ivan Smith, said at the weekend that the problem seemed to be that many bowlers were reluctant to enter because they felt only top players, in “stacked” teams, would be taking part. “This, in fact, is not the case and it was neven intended that it should be. There are no bowlers from other centres coming and the teams are no stronger than would compete in any extended tournament,”., said Mr Smith.
