More students sought

PA Wellington The Maori Affairs Department is still trying to find potential students to sponsor at Victoria University, but has turned down Maori school-leavers from Wellington. Twenty applicants — half from Wellington — have applied for the department’s initial eight “fellowships” for a three-year bachelor of commerce degree, majoring in accountancy. Six students, all from out-

side Wellington, have been accepted and the department hopes to find two more before lectures begin next week. The chief executive officer, Mr Neville Baker, said only applicants from outside Wellington were being accepted. He explained that the key factor to the students’ success rested on the Maori whanau (family) concept, which meant the students would live together while at Victoria in the Pendennis Hostel, Thorndon.
