Vandalism decried
The New Brighton Pier and Foreshore Promotion Society is at the limit of its endurance over the vandalism at the car-park next to the New Brighton Surf Club pavilion. The society’s secretary, Mr 0. J. Innes, has questioned an assertion, by the chairman of the Christchurch City Council’s works and traffic committee, Mr D. C. Close, that the council was unaware of recent problems at the carpark. Mr Innes said that vandali ism at the car-park was not new, and that it was at the
society’s request that the original judder bars, concrete wall, and chains had been put there in attempts to stop it. He cited various correspondence between the society and the council, which resulted in the erection of a fixed barrier at one end of the car-park last November. Mr Innes said he was disappointed that no locking device had been fitted. “It used to be quite a pleasant experience, on a summer evening, to drive on to the car-par,” he said. “Those days are long gone.”
