Poles don’t want asylum
PA Auckland Three Poles who deserted the freighter Frycz Modrezewski are not seeking political asylum, according to Auckland’s supervising immigration officer, Mr D. Hallas. On Friday the Poles — the ship’s fourth engineer, his wife, and another seaman — came out of hiding to talk to immigration officials. Mr Hallas said the Poles were quite clear that they
did not want political asylum. ship, believed to be a motorman, had still not approached immigration officials.
Mr Hallas said that five Poles who jumped ship from another freighter, the Hana Sawicka, last month were now applying for permanent residence.
