$100,000 lost

By

R. T. BRITTENDEN

in

Wellington

The chairman of the New Zealand Cricket Council’s Board of Control, Mr R. A. Vance, estimates that the Wellington weather has cost the council something like $lOO,OOO in receipts from the first Test between Australia and New Zealand.

There was a crowd of only about 5000 on Saturday and perhaps 4000 yesterday. The

gate takings for the two days total only $22,600 and that brings the tour income to $369,000, still well short of the $500,000 break-even point. The week-end gates had been insured, with a cover of $20,000, but the premium will now go into the debit column. The rain, if it was to be of commercial value to the game, had to fall before 11 a.m. It began an hour and a half after that.
