Wall St mixed
The Wall Street stock market recovered and stabilised last week after earlier share falls, and closed the week around the level of the previous week. Banks across the United States cut their prime lending rate from 17 to 16.5 per cent, but one analyst said that investors believe interest rates will remain persistently high, and that they are still concerned with the weakness of the American economy. The United States Commerce Department reported that new orders fell a sea-sonally-adjusted 1.5 per cent in January, after a revised decline of 0.2 per cent in December.
