Smithfield market

Sluggish retail offtake persisted in the United Kingdom last week for all red meats, as consumers turned to lowpriced pork and poultry, reports the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board in its weekly market survey. New Zealand lamb prices on Smithfield market were consequently weaker. PL grade was quoted at 65.066.0 p per lb and PM grade 65.0-66.0 p per lb. Prices for New Zealand beef again moved up slightly in the United States ’ last week, after continuing firm-

ing of the domestic cattle and beef markets. Spot prices for New Zealand cowbeef were 103.0 U.S. cents per lb c.i.f., and for bullbeef, 112.0 U.S. cents per lb., c.i.f. Japanese importers showed more interest last week in New Zealand mutton, stimulated by a strengthening of the yen against the U.S. dollar. Sales of MLI grade New Zealand carcase mutton (not Meat Board stocks) were reported at 59 U.S. cents per lb for April shipment.
