Liquor prices compared
PA Wellington Beer and spirits are comparatively no more expensive today than they were 10 years ago in spite of the latest price increases, says Lion Breweries. The breweries' spokesman, Mr Des Fitzgerald said that without-the 30 per cent sales tax on liquor applied at the last three Budgets, beer would be cheaper today in comparison with the average wage. Over the same period a hip of gin rose from 18c to 37c and the amount of work needed to earn it dropped from 6.5 minutes to 5 minutes. However, since 1979 . the Budget has imposed sales tax on liquor, and although Mr Fitzgerald did not have the latest comparisons he said it was thought the prices had stabilised to about the same level as the early 19705. The increases announced on February 5 by Mr D. J. Gasson, the director of the Commerce Division of the Department of Trade and Industry, bring the cost of a jug up by 5c to $1.48, and up by 2c a nip to 53c. Scotch, Irish, and New Zealand whiskies rise 2c a nip to 70c, 65c, and 55c respectively.
