Pebble relay to St Martins

The St Martins Harrier Club trio of Brenton Joyce, Greg Clark and Wayne Rouse took fastest time in the annual pebble relay around the Port Hills on Saturday. The team took one hour, 55 minutes, 18 seconds, which was considerably slower than their record-breaking time of 1:51:09 when they won the event last year. Three brothers, Warren and. Bruce Dellow of the United club and Murray Dellow from New Brighton, took second fastest time in 1:57:10, followed by the experienced and more favoured Eric Hunter (University), Denis O'Keefe (St Martins), and John Souter (Timaru) in 1:57:22. Each runner had to complete two laps, none of which were consecutive. Team members

carried a pebble instead of a baton. Forty-nine teams took part, compared with 42 last year. The race is held on a handicap basis, and the first team across the finish line was Lesley Homer, John Thomson, and Paul Horner, giving the St Martins club the double for the day. Starting off 17 minutes behind the front markers, the team came through to finish 4*/a minutes ahead of the next team. The second team to finish was a Rovers team of Alf Goy, Allan Nichols and Graeme Keeley, off 33 minutes behind "go." They narrowly headed off a composite team from Q.E. Club led by Don Mitchell.
