Speedway Cameron wins at Woodford Glen

Colin Cameron, in his MKI Ford Escort, narrowly won the Canterbury four-cylinder saloon car championship at Woodford Glen speedway on Saturday in front of a crowd of 12.000. Cameron started the last heat three points behind Paul French and one point ahead of John Townshend. French won the first heat starting from the pole position with Cameron finishing in sixth place starting from grid No. 12. Townshend came home third from grid No. 7. Cameron won the second heat after scoring from grid No. 3. French drove another good race to finish in third place while Townshend kept his chances .alive with a superb drive from the second to last row to finish fifth. The final heat was won by Cameron after a hectic early struggle with Tony Morris. Alan Lamont and Wayne Johnson. Townshend failed to appear and French had to battle his way through from the rear of the field. Cameron anticipated the

starter's flag and was away to a flying start on the inside line from the fourth row to be in the lead by the end of the first lap. He was quickly challenged by Tony Morris however Morris then appeared to back off. This left Cameron the undisputed leader while Morris and Alan Lamont fought out the second place closely followed by Wayne Johnson. French had worked his way through to fifth place but he could not get near Johnson and had to watch the championship slip away from his grasp. Results: C. Cameron, MKI Escort, 49 points. 1; P. French, Vauxhall Viva, 48, 2; W. Johnson, Vauxhall Chevette. 44. 3. A sportsman driver. Mike Allan, carried on his recordbreaking spree to again break his own lap record for the third time this season. The record now stands at 20.05. The demolition derby turned out to be the most entertaining yet, when the huge array of machinery staggered their last few paces of life. The winner was Steve Patterson in an Austin
