Labour Party policy
Sir,—There is a great need for a Labour Party as a true alternative to monopoly capitalism. Mr Rowling must avoid Peter Fraser’s mistake of abandoning the . principles of economic democracy.. Peter Fraser had the added .pressures of Moral Re-Armament and an industrial movement, run by Mr F. P. Walsh, who sold Labour out in 1951 when he could not get control of the watersiders. After World War 11.. those seeing British Labour’s imminent eclipse
started a “Keep Left” movement, and many recognised a similar need here. As secretary for the dissident group, I invited progressive members of Parliament to address a meeting in Christchurch, hoping for internal revival. Mr Ormond Wilson accepted, but was stopped by Peter Fraser when my advertisement appeared in “The Press.” Unable to defuse the large, enthusiast gathering of old stalwarts wanting a new Socialist Party, I let our “rebellion” lapse.— Yours, etc.,
VARIAN J. WILSON February-26, 1982.
