Cleaning a war memorial

Sir,—As work on the Cashel Street mall progresses, the dirty, uncared-for condition of the "Bridge of Remembrance stands stark at the end of what will be, we hope an attractive vista. Are we not proud of the bridge and its raison d'etre? Cannot the City Fathers (and Mothers) include the furbishing of this memorial as an important part of their project?.! raised the matter, informally, some years ago and was assured that a group of architects had considered the matter but had ruled that “It’s just not done” to clean down stone. It has been done with our two cathedrals and with St Paul’s London, and many others with considerable success. With less factory smoke in the air, we could expect to enjoy a decade or two of the pristine beauty of the bridge as we knew it in the 19205.— Yours, etc., W. J. A. BRITTENDEN. February 28, 1982.
