Challenging target

, Forty-five minutes, every week night, of news, current affairs and sports. It sounds a somewhat .daunting prospect but the team now planning “Eye Witness News” is confident of meeting the challenge. The programme, the product of a merger by “Eye Witness," "News at 10," and “Sporting Life," begins tonight on Two. The northern editor of current affairs, Terry Carter, says., elements of all three programmes will be given equal emphasis. v“Eye Witness News,” he says, will differ from a news bulletin in that it will expose major news stories to current affairs treatment; It will tackle subjects that would not .ordinarily be handled by news and will

have the staff and resources to initiate and investigate its own material. Mr Carter is keen to establish a sports presence in the programme, five nights a week "... a significant pres-' ence, not just a few results and news items.” Sports department staff will contribute in-depth film material, sometimes with a current-affairs style coverage, plus back-grounders, profiles and interviews. Mr Carter is not concerned at the exceptionally strong opposition programmed on the other channel against "Eye Witness News.” “We asked for a nine o’clock starting time and got it. “The aim now is to make the 45 minutes work so well we can extend to a full hour.”
