Stress at times of crisis
Listening
Psychologist Margit Brews series of radio programmes on stress last year attracted considerable public attention. The radio Concert Programme has now commissioned two more Margit Brew talks, this time on “Stress in Life Crises.” In these further talks Margit Brew presents her personal philosophy about the stress that occurs at times of crisis in our lives and ways in which we can cope.
In the first talk, at 7.30 tonight, she explores what she calls the “Gospel of Having” in our Western society and examines those who are the casualties of the crises that ensue, Crises
come at adolescence, retirement, bereavement and old age. She uses a telling example from Japan to illustrate the expendability of men who go from the competitive work force into purposeless retirement where they become for their wive? “sodi-gomai,” which means “bulky garbage.” - ’ Margit Brew then gives her view of our need for selfesteem and talks about learning to tolerate conflict and coming to accept our areas of personal competence.
