Nuclear reactor dangers
■ Sir, — Hiroshima, not Harrisburg, was where the nuclear industry lost its innocence. Your article (April 21) also failed to mention that a gas-cooled nuclear reactor at Lucerne is permanently sealed after a near melt-down in 1966. and in 1972 the Wuergassen reactor (Germany) suffered several failures similar to those at Harrisburg. In the United States alone there were, between January 1, 1972, and May 1, 1973, 850 “abnormal occurrences” some of which were extremely serious. The list of nuclear accidents does not include the hundreds of miners who have died or will die of cancer resulting from ingestion or inhalation of radioactive dust. Uranium mining is far more dangerous than coalmining or travelling in aircraft. Yours, etc.,
R. H. FINDLAY April 21, 1979.
