N-plant 'being built on volcano slopes’
NZPA Washington A group that says an American nuclear reactor is being built on the side of a Philippine volcano has asked for a public hearing by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission on the risks involved. The debate could broaden to cover the whole question of the extent to which the United States should export goods that are considered dangerous at home.
The Centre for Development policy, a nonprofit organisation financed by foundations and private contributors, is opposing the export of a 620mW power plant and the uranium fuel for it. The plant would be big enough to supply the power needs of a city with
a population of about 300,000.
“They have started building the reactor on the slope of a volcano, 85km north-west of Manila and in the middle of one of the world’s most active earthquake zones,” according to Lindsay Mattison, director of the centre.
