Basketball matches under protest
The results from two first division basketball games at Cowles Stadium last night are subject to formal protests. Jaks-High School Old Boys beat Mairehau A, 77-51. with the tall New Zealand representative, John Hill, playing a major role in Old Boys’ win. However, Hill’s name was not entered on the official scoresheet, and Gordon Phillips, the Mairehau coach, signed the sheet only under protest. Hill, who top-scored with 20 points, took the court at the start of the game in spite of his name not being entered. The second protest occurred in the women’s match between Rebels A and Continental Caterers Rangiora. This bottom-of-the-table clash resulted in a narrow 45-44 win to Rebels but the Rangiora coach will protest
about the scoring in the early part of the game. Checkers A beat Aranui Old Boys A, 62-40. in a highspirited match. The coach, Carl Dickel, scored 14 points as did Kelvin Duff to help Checkers to the win. Mairehau High School, formerly . one of the glamout sides in the women’s competition, was over-run in the second half by a very efficient Checkers combination, Jane McMeekan had a splendid game to score 24 points. Results:— MEN Jaks-High School Old Boys 77, Mairehau A 61; Checkers A 62, Aranui O.B' A 40; University A 64 Y.M.C.A. 54. WOMEN Rebels A 45, Continental C.R. 44; Checkers A 57, Mai rehau H.S.
