‘No fish-price rise’
Christchurch fish prices are not expected to rise although in the North Island some varieties may be as much as 30 per cent dearer since the lifting of price controls on April 6. The chairman of the Christchurch Fish Retailers’ Association (Mr Barry Mather) said that good catches
off Canterbury since Christmas had resulted in a boom for fish retailers. Big rises in meat prices had helped, too.
Christchurch fish was bought by retailers at auction, where the prices were not controlled, Mr Mather said. Thus local prices were about the lowest in New Zealand.
