Fiji is the friendliest of places to visit, and the highlight of our trip was to attend a local church one Sunday morning. There were four of us staying with friends. Thea, the housegirl, asked whether we would like to go to church with her. We jumped at the opportunity. “What time does the service start?” we asked, and were told about 10 a.m. Not wishing to be late we arrived soon after 9.30 a.m. The church was filled to overflowing, and toward the front were all the children, dozens and dozens of delightful small tots. The boys in spotless white shirts and ties, the
girls in white frocks with ribbons in their hair. The minister kept going to the door to see if there were any other people coming. There were many, just strolling along, as is the pace in Fiji. The service eventually started closer to 11 than 10. We were given English hymn books from which we sang lustily, much to the amusement of the children near us. The service, in Fijian, lasted until 1 p.m., but we enjoyed the “atmosphere" and hope to attend next, time we are in Fiji. —ANNE FINCH, 41 East Belt, Rangiora.
