Deadly snake captured
PA New Plymouth A deadly poisonous sea snake was found on Waitara Beach on Saturday afternoon.
Commonly known as a yellow belly, the snake was highly venomous and there was no known antidote in New Zealand, according to Mr L. W. Garrett, of the Kawaroa Aquarium. The deadly creature was discovered by persons on the beach, according to Taranaki police. It hissed at them, and so they called the police, who captured it, using a rake.
It was taken to the aquarium in New Plymouth and identified. The snake is 76cm long and
has a black back with black-and-white stripes near its tail.
“I suppose it came down to New Zealand from warmer, more tropical waters," Mr Garrett said.
“It is the second one that has been found locally. About a year ago one was found near Paritutu and brought to the aquarium. We put it in cold seawater, but it must have been too cold, because it died.
“We have put this one in warmer water. We intend to keep it and we hope it will live. It is well alive now and is swimming around on top of the water,” he said.
