Father saves infant
’A Gisborne A young Gisborne man, Mr Peter Neilson, took his t w o-year-old daughter, Fiona, in his arms and jumped from the roof of their home as fire cut off their escape early yesterday. Two hours earlier, about 1.30 a.m. Mr Neilson had taken his wife, Kathy, to the Gisborne Maternity Hospital as she thought their baby was about to be born. Mrs Neilson was wrong, but her mistaken belief probably saved her life
and that of her unborn child. A neighbour, Mr L. A. Neill, said he could not see how Mrs Neilson could have escaped unscathed if she had been in the house when the fire raged through it. Mr Neilson had to jump about four metres on to the lawn after climbing on to the roof through a window with Fiona. He had been awakened by the smell of smoke from the fire which destroyed the two-storey home.
