Sadat’s poll triumph

NZPA-Reuter Cairo President Anwar Sadat has dissolved Parliament and set June 7 as the date for Egypt’s first multi-party elections since the 1952 revolution which overthrew King Farouk. The new Parliament will meet on June 23. Voters approved the dissolution this week in a referendum in which they also overwhelmingly approved President Sadat’s peace treaty with Israel. The outcome of Thursday’s two referendums was described as a triumph for Mr Sadat, who wanted to show the rest of the Arab world that he has overwhelming domestic support for the treaty with Israel.

Some 10M Egyptians voted 99.95 per cent in favour of the treaty and 99.90 per cent in favour of dissolving Parliament and holding fresh elections two years ahead of time. The President has decreed an increase in the number of deputies by 32 —allocating 30 seats for women and two more seats for the Sinai Peninsula. This will bring the number of elected representatives in Parliament to 382 instead of 350. As in the dissolved Parliament, the President is expected to appoint 10 more members, designed to ensure representation for the nation’s Copts, bringing the total to 392, the authoritative newspaper “Al-Ahram” has said.
