‘Union Agency’ changes
PA Hamilton A promotional brochure . which has upset unions and unionists for three years will be experimentally changed by an Auckland-based insurance company.
Use by Capital Life Assurance, Ltd, the brochure is under the name, “Union Agency,” and refers to “union members of good standing.”-
The brochure advised ways to save money and obtain mortgage finance, and said the offer was available only to “union members of good standing.” Froth Wellington, the legal and research officer of the Federation of Labour (Mr R. G. Trott) said the federation received complaints every few months through member unions. “The concern is that the company gives the impression that it has some sort of union backing. In past years the F.O.L. has gone out to affiliate unions advising that there is no conncection whatsoever.” Mr Trott said the brochure gave the impression that only union members were circulated, suggesting access to union membership lists. A spokesman for Capital Life Assurance said that the brochure . had drawn complaints from time to time, but said these were mainly from the news media. There had been no direct approach from a union or the F.O.L. he said, but the company had decided to change the wording of the brochure, and the offending phrases, “union agency” and “union members of good standing” would be deleted.
