Two shooters killed
PA Taupo Two fatal hunting accidents occurred in the Kaimanawa Ranges during the week-end. A man was killed when he was shot through the neck on Saturday, and another man died yesterday after being shot in the thigh. The man killed on Saturday was Arthur William Just, aged 47, of Auckland. The accident occurred about 7.20 a.m. near the Hinemaiaia River, when a shooting companion mistook Mr Just for a stag, according to the Taupo police. The
body’ was brought out of the bush by hunting companions. The police said that there were no suspicious circumstances. A rescue helicopter’s mercy dash yesterday’ afternoon to try to save the second man who was shot in the thigh was thwarted by low cloud and thick bush east of Lake Taupo. The man's name had not been released late last evening. The helicopter tried to fly into the Tauranga-Taupo River area of the Kaimanawa Ranges after the dead man’s companion had tramped for several hours out of the bush to seek help.
The shooting occurred about 11 a.m., according to the Turangi police. It is not yet known whtj fired the shot. A ground rescue team reached the dead man last evening and will bring the body 7 out today.
