Newcomers in league team

Rick Odering (Addington), Cliff Leney (Linwood) and Derek McLaughlan (Eastern Suburbs-Hertz) have been chosen to make their debuts for the Canterbury rugby league team against Wellington at Lower Hutt tomorrow evening. Both swift and elusive players, Odering and Leney have been placed on the wings of the back-line, and McLaughlan is to join another very promising youngster, Wayne Wallace (Hornby), in the second-row. The selection of Odering and Leney was at the expense of Paul McCone (Linwood), who scored three tries in three appearances for the province last winter. But McCone made a delayed start to the present season because of injury and the provincial panel has named him as reserve back. However, medical reports will decide whether Odering and McLaughlan will remain in the team. Both missed the Canterbury B game against Otago-Southland on Saturday and McLaughlan was not used by his club yesterday. In the absence of several established representatives, the side bears something of an experimental look.

McLaughlan’s promotion to the team proper allows the coach (Mr Trevor Bisman) to try out the Kiwi secondrow trialist, Paul Truscott (Linwood), in his club role of hooker, leaving Kerry Corkran (Sydenham) on the substitutes’ bench. Canterbury has a particularly mobile pack, if conceding size because of the non-availability of Alan Rushton (Eastern) and Terry Gi 11 ma n (Marist-Western Suburbs). Mark Vincent (Sydenham) will be having his first full game at stand-off half, but should benefit from the presence of the seasoned Wally Wilson (Linwood), Michael O’Donnell ((Marist) and Mocky Brereton (Marist) alongside him. The team is:— R. L. Alfeld (Hornby); C. R. Leney (Linwood), M. P. Brereton (Marist), M. W. J. O’Donnell (Marist), R. H. Odering (Addington); M. D. Vincent (Sydenham), W. A. Wilson (Linwood, captain); M. E. Broadhurst (Marist), P. W. Truscott (Linwood), R. W. Dalzell (Linwood): D. McLaughlan (Eastern), W. J. Wallace (Hornby); B. R. Edkins (Eastern, vice-cap-tain). Reserves: P. M. McCone (Linwood), K. R. Corkran (Sydenham), __
