Hastings clear winner of club golf title
PA Hastings Hastings raced away with the Peter Stuyvesant national club golf championship at Bridge Pa yesterday, heading the second-placed Shandon by a big 24 point, margin. The Hastings team of Stuart Jones (senior), Tim Ormond (intermediate) and Stephen Hakiwai (junior) scored a tournament record of 176 Stableford points. The previous highest score was 169 posted by Hamilton in winning the 1978 tournament.
The seven times national amateur champion, Jones, with a 2-under-par 70 for 38 points, pushed Hastings into a 10-point lead on the 16team field.
Yesterday it was the turn of the 19-year-old, Hakiwai, who after parring the Ist nine holes turned the final into a one-horse race. Jones, who dropped only one shot, against the card
yesterday, to be one under for the tournament, contributed 73 points to the Hastings total. Hakiwai, after his splendid round yesterday, added 54 points and the steady Ormond, 49. In a clear second place was the Shandon team of Dale Prosser, Jim Grime and Brian Watson on 152. There was a three-way tie on 149 for the third place between St Clair, Whakatane and Akarana, with the trophy finally going to Whakatane because of the better stablesford score by its senior champion, Mike Nicholson.
