Naval officer reprimanded

PA Auckland A Navy sub-lieutenant has been reprimanded at a CourtMartial in connection with the sinking of a Navy tender returning from the crash site of a Royal Australian Air Force Fill bomber in the Hauraki Gulf last November. John Bernard Pope was convicted of putting the. vessel Meola in hazard but a charge of causing the vessel to be damaged by striking a shoal was dismissed. Pope had denied both

The bilge pump could not be found and a crew member had had to use bailers. Defence counsel (Mr C. S. Blackie) said that Pope could not be blamed for the Meola’s sinking because if all the equipment in the boat had been working the tender would not have sunk.
