Trade with Chile

Sir, ■ — Mr Rowling’s recent hint that the union ban on trade with Chile should be lifted suggests that it is he and not the F.O.L. who is out of touch with the situation in Chile, because 1979 is no different from the previous five years of the junta’s rule. Political arrests continue, prisoners “disappear” and people still live in fear of the secret police. While these conditions are not exceptional in today’s world, Chile is. Over 100 years of democracy was overthrown by the international actions of the multinational companies, which initiatied, supported and funded the group. International support of the boycott shows our solidarity with the Chilean people and puts pressure on the junta. The F.O.L. should be applauded for putting the interests of the Chilean people above any shortterm gains for this country. — Yours, etc., T. JACKSON. April 19, 1979.
