Citrus regulations to change

P A Tauranga Lemon and sweet orange growers may 7 from November be able to sell their fruit where they please. After years of discussion, the citrus marketing authority has asked the'Minister of Agriculture (Mr Maclntyre) to remove the authority’s compulsory power to acquire ail lemons and sweet oranges. At the same time the authority hopes to market other fresh citrus fruits.

The deputy chairman of the authority (Mr B. Piper) said the Minister seemed pleased at the request, and Mr Piper saw no difficulty in having compulsory acquisition revoked from November.

“The authority has been in existence for 26 years. For almost the whole of that time compulsory acquisition has been a bone of contention,” said Mr Piper. With the end of compulsory acquisition, the authority is moving towards the purchase and marketing of other citrus fruits.

“In time, we may be given the right to purchase subtropical fruits which are not citrus, but initially we tVould look only at citrus,” he said.
