Big day for hockey family

By KEVIN TUTTY May 2 will be a day to remember for Mr Havilah Down, a stalwart of Canterbury and New Zealand hockey, in the afternoon he will watch three grandsons — Selwyn. Barry and Chris Maister — play for the President’s XI against the visiting Kenyan team. In the evening he will be presented with the International Hockey Federation’s Award of Merit by the president of the F.I.H. (Mr Rene Frank).

The President’s team to play Kenya, and the news that Mr Frank would be in Christchurch for the presentation were announced by the chairman of the New Zealand Hockey Association (Mr D. L. Coulter). Mr Frank will travel to New Zealand after the Perth international tournament which ends on April 29. Two players from outside Christchurch, Colin Schaffer (West Coast) and Chris Leslie (South Canterbury), are included in the invitation team. The remainder are senior Christchurch players. Graeme Sligo, an unsuccessful New Zealand trialist in February as a goalkeeper, has been given the opportunity to show his ability at international level.

Selwyn Maister, the captain, and Barry Maister, give the team a solid base of experience. Both

are long-term New Zealand representatives. Chris Maister, a former New Zealand representative and Chum Bhikha, a New Zealand trialist last vear, and a member of the Wellington team that beat Canterbury in last year’s national Challenge Shield final, add further class to the forwards.

Chri Maister will probably play in his usual in-side-left position and Bhikha will probably share the right wing with Leslie. Steve Ambler will be the likely inside-right.

lan Steel and Peter Christensen, a brother of the New Zealand representative, John, will be the full-backs. Murray Peacock, the consistent Sydenham centre-half, has been rewarded with a place in the side, and will probably be the right-half, sharing the position with Schaffer. Bhikhu Bhana. a utility player in the Canterbury team last year, is the likely left-half, a position where his steady play will be of most use. Bruce McLean who made his Canterbury A debut last year will play his first international match on the left-wing, his specialist position. The team is:

Sligo, Steel, Christensen, Peacock. Schaffer, Selwyn Maister (captain), Bhana, Leslie, Ambler, Bhikha, Barry Maister, Chris Maister, McLean.
