Tekapo development

Sir. — The Mackenzie County Council’s decision not to maintain Twizel has been widely reported. A decision by the council concerning development in Tekapo has received little attention. The council has granted an application for the erection of four, one roomed motel units, in addition to the existing house, on a small section, despite objections from 32 ratepayers. In doing so, it is ignoring changes proposed in the Tekapo town plan, the review of which is three

years overdue. Motel development in a residential zone w’ould not be permitted under this plan. Once the precedent is established other commercial enterprises could be sited in residential areas. Family motels are desperately needed in Tekapo and suitable sites are available. There is criticism of the Lands and Survey subdivision in Tekapo and the lack of controlled planning. It would be a shame if lessons are not learnt and inadvisable developments allowed to proceed. — Yours, etc.,

G. B. BLAKE April 18, 1979.
