‘Psychiatric treatment for Soviet unionists'

Sir, — Psychiatric medicine continues to be abused by the Soviet Government in the systematic suppression of dissent within its borders, as your article on Soviet trade unionists (April 18) pointed out. Even though the World Psychiatric Association condemned this practice in late 1977, Amnesty International has been able to document, since then, the cases of more than 25 people who have been confined in psychiatric hospitals for political rather than genuine medical reasons. Perhaps if we become more aware of how human rights are denied to people in other countries, wherever they are, we can be more effective in raising a cry in protest. Our voices can be heard. — Yours, etc., THOMAS PIERSON. April 19, 1979.
