University bursaries

Sir — Re university bursaries (Mr Englebrecht, April 19); I am tired of hearing the myth that all universitytrained people are puffed up with the pride of knowledge and greedy for money. Given a few “accepted” professions are well-paid even overpaid, but what of the majority? After years of intensive study, many could get twice or three times as much pay, even in Australia, but are unselfishly serving the people in this country. Thev often work long hours and are paid nothing for overtime. All they get is kicks for doing so, by those who accept all the benefits from their work. I am all for Christianity and therefore believe that Christ was an advocate for justice. There is no justice in this country for such young people — not even appreciation — and I advise them to get out before they put their roots down. —Yours, etc., E. WILKINSON. April 19, 1979.
