Strike called off

PA Auckland Notice of strike action by Air New Zealand stewards was withdrawn yesterday. International flights would have been disrupted from April 25, but a meeting of representatives of Air New Zealand and the Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union, in the presence of the Industrial Conciliator (Mr F, M. Gerbic) resulted .in the strike notice being cancelled. The issue behind the strike notice — a demarcation row between the airline stewards and members of the New Zealand Hotel Workers’ Federation — remained unresolved but a meeting of the three parties was arranged for next week. In the meantime, the airline has agreed to withdraw an application it had made to the Arbitration Court for a hearing in the demarcation issue and, with the strike notice withdrawn, the way was also cleared for conciliation on the ground stewards’ award to resume on May 8.

The company had refused to negotiate the award while the strike notice was “live.”;
