Squash access ‘fails to satisfy’

Limited public access to the Mount Pleasant Squash Club in return for the $10,700 Christchurch City Council grant would not satisfy many people, said Cr Mollie Clark yesterday.

Labour councillors were still concerned about the speed with which the grant had been made without prior consultation with the com-munity-services committee, she said.

Neither had there been proper consultation with the club itself. Other Christchurch clubs might now feel that they could approach the council when short of money. “The resentment that has been created throughout the city is quite intense,” said Cr Clark.

Cr R. Lester said he could understand that the club was closely linked to the community centre “but we feel the club is in some ways riding on the back of the centre or perhaps sheltering under it instead of standing on its own feet.”

Three means of public access have been proposed: some weekday squash classes, some public open days, and some school-holiday programmes.
